On October 21, 2023, the world’s first long-distance transoceanic liquid hydrogen transport was successfully completed at Yantian Port in Shenzhen, marking a historic breakthrough for liquid hydrogen transportation in China. The transport, under full safety support from the maritime authorities, involved the "Saishang" vessel carrying liquid hydrogen tank containers, traveling over 10,000 nautical miles before arriving at Yantian Port. The cargo was then transported to Zhongshan for terminal utilization testing using shore-side lifting and overland transport methods. This success not only demonstrates China's leadership in liquid hydrogen transport technology and safety management but also sets a new milestone in global hydrogen transportation.

The liquid hydrogen was transported in ISO standard tank containers with secondary insulation using liquid nitrogen, departing from Rotterdam, Europe, and passing through the Atlantic Ocean, the Cape of Good Hope, and the Strait of Malacca before arriving at Yantian Port. This marks the first time such a long-distance liquid hydrogen transport has been achieved globally.
As a special cargo requiring cryogenic transportation at -253°C, liquid hydrogen presents significant technical challenges for long-distance shipping. The successful project overcame key technical hurdles, including controlling the liquid hydrogen tank shipping process, risk identification across the entire supply chain, and "shore-side lifting" unloading at ports, ensuring the safe completion of the transport.
Hydrogen energy, as one of the most competitive forms of low-carbon energy, is becoming a key driver of energy transformation worldwide. The breakthrough in liquid hydrogen transport technology provides new momentum for China’s hydrogen energy industry development and global hydrogen trade connections. Currently, China is the world’s largest hydrogen producer, with vast potential for liquid hydrogen applications, especially in aerospace and high-end manufacturing sectors such as semiconductors.
With the accelerated development of China’s hydrogen energy industry chain, it is expected that by 2060, China’s hydrogen energy industry will reach a scale of 4.6 trillion yuan. The success of the world’s longest liquid hydrogen sea transport demonstration project has provided strong momentum to drive China’s innovation chain, industry chain, and exploration of hydrogen energy trade.
